St Peter's Hospital is run by its administrator, Francis Vuma.

"Francis acts with clarity and conviction and has a good overview of the hospital. He has the ability to be proactive in responding to hospital needs...He is a highly motivated employee and sometimes I am amazed at what he is able to achieve."

Facilities

St Peter's Hospital

The Hospital has a holding bed capacity of 52 patients, which is made up of a maternity ward, male and female wards and a paediactric ward. Even though St Peter's is seriously understaffed, those that work there are cheerful and hard working.

There is an operating theatre, laboratory, pharmacy and laundry, but all fall far below the standards set by the Medical Council of Malawi, let alone the standards people are used to in the West.

These hospital facilities are all that is available to the 10,000 people living on Likoma in Malawi and approximately 70,000 people who live in nearby Mozambique and Tanzania. People who are hurt, sick or even dying are brought to St Peter's by boat from the nearby countries.

Is the work of African Steps making any difference?

The additional staff housing and funding for staff salaries and incentives has made a massive difference to the hospital's ability to retain and attract healthcare workers and in turn that means the lives of many have been improved by the provision of better, albeit still basic, healthcare.
